Casty, Gian

Gian Casty was born l9l4 in Zuoz, Switzerland. After studying painting at the most prestigious Swiss and French art institutions, he soon began experimenting in glass painting. His glass piece Christophorus was purchased in 1955 as a gift for Pope Pius XII on his eightieth birthday. Casty’s work is hung throughout Switzerland in public buildings, businesses and churches. The influence of glass painting is evident in Casty’s picture books: The figures are reduced to the simplest surfaces, often by limiting the outlines. The colors are dazzling and broken with strong dabs of color. Casty died in Basel, Switzerland in 1979.
