Ivan Gantschev was born in Bulgaria in 1925. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, after which he began working as an illustrator. He moved to Frankfurt, Germany in 1967, after which he published his first children's book. His prizewinning illustrations earned him international recognition. Gantschev illustrated more than 100 picture books for children and adults and was awarded a gold plaque in 1985 on the occasion of the Biennale for Illustration in Bratislava.
