Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen was born in Denmark on April 2, 1805, and trained for a career on the stage before he became a writer. During his lifetime he achieved international success as a playwright and novelist, but it is his fairytales that are still read and loved by children and adults around the globe today. Among his many widely beloved stories are “The Little Match Girl,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Snow Queen,” and “The Little Mermaid.” Andersen died in 1875, but his name now lives on in one of the most sought-after awards in children’s literature: the Hans Christian Andersen Medal.
